Climate Action Photo competition

World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is holding a photo competition for the 2015 WMO calendar and 2015 World Meteorological Day. The theme is Climate Knowledge for Climate Action. Winning entries will feature in the WMO calendar and be showcased on WMO’s website and Flickr gallery, and be displayed at 2015 World Meteorological Day celebrations.

 WMO is looking for photographs which illustrate our understanding of our weather and climate and our action to cope with natural climate variability, human induced climate change and related extreme events like heat-waves and floods. Examples include how we can use seasonal forecasts, prediction of El Niño/La Niña events etc. to improve food production, water management, disaster risk reduction and health outcomes; as well as action on climate change.
Young people are especially encouraged to submit photographs, but there are no age limitations. Send photos to social@wmo.int. All submitted photos must be a minimum size of 10cms to 15cms and in high resolution at a minimum of 300 dots per inch (DPI). All photos must be submitted in jpeg or tiff format, with little compression to preserve image quality. Black and white photographs as well as coloured photographs will be accepted.

 Entries will narrowed down to a shortlist by a WMO panel of experts in meteorology and climate science as well as experienced professional photographers. Entries will be judged on:

• Technical quality, clarity, and composition; visual impact.
• Overall effectiveness in conveying a compelling/interesting story through the photo on how we use climate knowledge for action on climate change and adaptation, and sustainable development. Therefore, the choice of subject and how you choose to describe it in the entry submission form, including captioning, are very important.
• Novelty, flair for the unexpected, and imagination.

  Results will be announced before 15 September 2014.
