First Belarusian University Joins Magna Charta Universitatum

In November 2014, ODB Brussels in cooperation with the National Institute for Higher Education organized a seminar on the opportunities of accession and cooperation with Magna Charta Universitatum Observatory, with input from representatives of this reputable international organization. Last week International University "MITSO" became the first institution of higher education in Belarus to sign the Magna Charta of the European Universities. The signing took place during the international conference "Values Beyond 2015: The Global Challenge for Universities and their Students" which was held on September 17-18 in Bologna (Italy). The Magna Charta Universitatum was opened for universities to sign in honour of the 900th anniversary of the Bologna university. It currently has 776 signatories from universities all over the world. The number increases every year. The Magna Charta Universitatum reflects the vital role that the universities have in developing European humanistic traditions and the global civilization. It also states that fundamental principles and benefits associated with academic freedom and institutional autonomy are crucial for universities, and that strict adherence to these values is for the benefit of individual societies and humanity in general.
